Switchbar vs. OpenIn

OpenIn is a powerful link handler for the Mac. Its rules can look at the app a link came from, the keys you hold, or your Focus mode, and they can run JavaScript. It handles email, phone, and file links too.

Switchbar takes a simpler path. Click a link, pick a browser, profile, or app from one clean row, and set rules in a few clicks. It's free, needs no account, and runs on both Mac and Windows.

What is Switchbar?

Switchbar is a free browser picker for Mac and Windows. Make it your default browser, and every link you click shows a row of your favorite browsers, profiles, and apps. Choose with a click or a keystroke, and check "Remember this choice" to turn that decision into a rule. Switchbar finds your browsers, profiles, and apps on its own, so it's useful from the first link.

What is OpenIn?

OpenIn is a Mac app that handles URLs, email addresses, phone links, and files. You build rules around the source app, modifier keys, Focus mode, and where a link came from, and you can script them in JavaScript or rewrite links with regular expressions. It's sold on the Mac App Store and Setapp. This comparison is based on OpenIn 4.

1. Ready in a minute

OpenIn rewards the time you put into it. Switchbar is useful before you've configured anything: make it your default browser and it finds your browsers, profiles, and apps on its own. There are no scripts to write first.

2. Rules you can read at a glance

Switchbar rules match a URL, domain, or email address with wildcards and choose where it opens. Most of them are created by checking "Remember this choice" in the picker. Drag rules into order, or export them to another computer.

If you enjoy building your own logic, OpenIn goes much further. If you just want Zoom links in Zoom and work sites in your work profile, Switchbar gets you there faster.

Switchbar removes tracking parameters, unwraps Outlook Safe Links, and expands common short links like bit.ly and t.co by default, so links open clean without any setup.

OpenIn can expand shortened links as well, and strip tracking parameters with a JavaScript rewrite that you write yourself.

4. Mac and Windows

OpenIn is Mac only and needs macOS 15.1 or later. Switchbar runs on both Mac and Windows with the same picker and rules, in 30 languages.

Moving from OpenIn

  1. Download Switchbar and make it your default browser.
  2. Pick your favorite browsers, profiles, and apps from the ones it finds.
  3. Recreate your most-used rules by checking "Remember this choice" the next time those links come up.

Which one should you choose?

OpenIn is still a good fit if you:

  • Want rules that check the source app, modifier keys, or Focus mode, or that run JavaScript
  • Want one app to handle phone links, files, and magnet links too
  • Automate links with Shortcuts or widgets

Switchbar is the better fit if you:

  • Want a fast picker that's useful without setup
  • Prefer simple rules over scripts
  • Want clean links by default
  • Use Windows, or both Mac and Windows

Open every link in the right place without writing a line of code: try Switchbar for free.
