Tea Bag Index

Tea Bag Index is a citizen science and research platform for studying decomposition, soil health, and the global carbon cycle by burying and later weighing standardized tea bags. The website supports users in recording observation details such as location, dates, tea bag type, and weight measurements, making it possible to compare decomposition rates across different sites and conditions. The platform includes instructions for carrying out the Tea Bag Index method, guidance for submitting observations, and tools for exploring and visualizing results. It is designed for researchers, students, teachers, gardeners, farmers, and other participants who want to contribute data on how organic material breaks down in soil. By using a standardized method with green tea and rooibos tea, Tea Bag Index helps collect comparable data that can support studies of soil processes, environmental conditions, and ecosystem change.
