The Indianapolis Recorder, established in 1895 by George P. Stewart and Will Porter, is one of the oldest African-American newspapers in the United States. Originally a two-page church bulletin, it has evolved into a prominent weekly publication dedicated to empowering the African-American community in Indianapolis and beyond. Known for its comprehensive local and national coverage, the Recorder addresses socio-economic and political issues, celebrates community achievements, and provides a platform for diverse voices. Under the leadership of William G. Mays, the paper has seen significant growth and continues to focus on community engagement and youth journalism education.
