Blue Apron was founded in 2012 premised on a simple desire—its founders wanted to cook at home with their families, but they found grocery shopping and menu planning burdensome, time-consuming, and expensive. The founders hand-packed the first Blue Apron boxes themselves, delivered them to family and friends, and received immediate positive feedback. Since those initial deliveries, it has scaled rapidly, developing its expertise and an ever-more ambitious vision. It is reimagining the way that food is produced, distributed, and consumed, and as a result, is building a better food system that benefits consumers, food producers, and the planet. The nature of its business carries unique and exciting challenges, and its employees working across five offices take on these complexities to ensure each customer receives the highest quality product every week. Its core product is the cooking experience it helps customers create. Central to these experiences are the original recipes it designs and sends along with fresh, seasonal ingredients directly to customers. It also sells wine, which can be paired with meals, as well as kitchen tools and staples used in its test kitchens where new recipes are created. Customers often cook with it multiple times each week and trust it to craft delicious recipes to feed their families and loved ones.
